My husband did the same thing with a large office desk that we found at a garage sale. Paid only $25 dollars for the desk. It was hard on my back and shoulders to sew without my machine sitting flush with the desk . I do my own quilting so this desk with a large top was ideal. He made a false bottom just rectangle shaped the machine sits on and then measured the base of the machine and made a template. That was cut out of acrylic and it fits around the base of the machine. I can lift it out whenever there is a need.
