Lynn,

You got the stop motion washer in wrong I'll bet.

Since you have the small screw out, will the stop motion knob turn if you hold the hand wheel?
If it does, does the needle bar go up and down at the same time?

If the needle bar moves as the stop motion knob turns, hold the needle bar so the main shaft doesn't turn and turn the knob by hand counter clock wise. It should unscrew then.

It might help to squirt some Tri-Flow in there to help a bit.

The stop motion washer fits in with the two little tabs in the center facing the small knob. Then turn the knob in till it's tight, not death grip tight, but tight and put in the screw. Then loosen it till it stops. The hand wheel should free wheel. If not, tilt the right end of the machine up ( helps to keep the washer from falling off the shaft ) and remove the stop motion knob. Then rotate the washer 180° on the shaft and reinstall the knob.

That should do it.
