I use Jan's method too, and it's a great basic method.
If I need more than 2 HSTs of the same fabrics, for example for a Carpenter's Wheel, I draw a much larger grid on my fabrics. The little extra time needed to draw lines on the fabric is worth it to me, in terms of accuracy and happiness. It's great to see 8 HSTs arrive at the same time!!
