Yesterday I bought this wonderful older Sunbonnet Sue quilt at an estate sale. I don't think it is quite as old as the 30's, but still has vintage fabrics.

An interesting point about it is the orientation of the girls along the outer long edges -- they are set so that they are standing upright when the quilt is draped at the edge of the bed. My picture shows the quilt on a queen sized bed.

Does anyone know anything about the history of the Sunbonnet Sue pattern? I know that some have hands and some do not, but I don't know why.
