warm & natural states you can quilt up to 10" between quilting lines- which means there should be a line of quilting at least every 10"- in all directions. if you simply have 'channels' in one direction the batting can separate- leaving bare areas and then 'balls' of batting- especially in a quilt that will be laundered often (like a baby/kids quilt)
