i have been using irfanview for about 15years. freeware. never ever had a virus or a trojan. i, too, use AVG & it found a virus on the home site of another program i have also liked for years when i was doing an update recently. so, irfanview is all i am using now. accepts photoshop plugins. also. i can resize, edit colors, red eye and all usual photo issues. i have looked at gimp too. another great program. but i am not sure it has the range of capabilities of irfanview.

...my son is a software engineer. he started out with degree in design of computer graphics/animation. he has commented on some of my nature photography, and is impressed w my photo editing. he also has installed photoshop on my pc, which is fun...but steep learning curve. so, being the lazy nonprofessional photographer that i be ---i use irfanview
