Right now I don't use a foot pedal on my Brother but years ago I read this tip, tried it and it worked -- turn the foot pedal around (back to front). So simple but it really did work for me. Hope it does for you.
I haven't tried this but Leah Day suggests turning the foot pedal around to get better control of the speed when you are doing FMQ.
I use one of those rubber mesh things like you line kitchen cupboards with and it works pretty well. I have to adjust the foot position now and then but it is better than not having anything at all.
