Featherweights are made of aluminum. A break in the clear coat and paint will allow moisture to get in. Moisture will attack the aluminum resulting in 'aluminum rot'. It does spread. Usual treatment is to clean the metal down until it's bare and has clear margins then protect with new primer and paint. This usually means that you have to make the area that your repairing larger than the original damage.
