Congrats on your machine! I would love to have one of those carved boxes. Folks on this site mostly use sewing machine oil on cotton balls to clean the dirt off of the Japan and the decals. Be gentle. I think I remember hearing that the W9 decals are even more fragile than the Singer decals. My machine was clean enough that I didn't risk damaging it and I never did any cleaning on it. If I thought I needed to clean it I would start on the back somewhere inconspicuous and watch carefully to ensure I wasn't removing the decals.
