I don't do machine embroidery but I found that by googling "machine embroidery designs" or even just "embroidery designs" many sites that have them will come up. Many of these designs can be adapted for handwork. You could also jump off those ideas and design your own.

You can click on a design to enlarge it,
then right click to "save picture as..." and designate where you want to save it...I often put it on my desktop. From there you can right click on the desktop icon for that design and open it in Microsoft Picture Editor.
From there you can enlarge it, crop it, etc. and save it again to the desktop so you can print it out.

OR you could do the legal thing and purchase the design!
