Jeanie, I think you're right about the border being too dark. I would do a very small red border after the white and a broader blue one instead of your nice dark fabric.
GG, my village has about 30.000 inhabitants. My DS is living in a town twice as big as where I'm living.
QE, the LQS is too far away to go there by bike. I do have nice saddlebags but not for fabric
