For the past 19 years, I have used the technique Eleanor Burns (Quilt in a Day) illustrates in her books (at least the ones she wrote 19 years ago!). It's just a pattern of arranging them so they don't get mis-arranged, and they stay in order as you get further along because you don't cut the threads between them.
