Can't see why not, seeing as they're lined up already. You might even be able to fit a later shuttle model's winder: One like the one in this 128

The 27, 127, 28 and 128 are all very similar, and there's probably one of us who has one of each and can say for sure what (if any) would work with your hand crank mod.
It wouldn't have occurred to me to modify the machine: I'd have searched for a treadle cabinet instead - it's a good excuse, isn't it?
