Yes this! I tend to look at it that way too. Maybe add a green as thin sashing or so to tie it all together. I like the sampler idea and the basket idea since you said you were a traditionalist.

if you reorganize them, you only have three colors - put white backgrounds together for light, both red backgrounds for darks and other four together for mediums....having only three colors may make it easier to find a pattern.
