Also look very carefully at the hole in the needle plate. Sometimes when a needle breaks it can wreak havoc there. I take the needle plate off, and if there is any rough spot I use a very small jewelry file (got it at Walmart for a couple of dollars) and gently file the burr off. This has happened to me more than once and this has fixed it.
