My take on the back tack vs reverse is this. If the machine will sew in reverse you can adjust the reverse stitches just as you can the forward stitches. Those machines that do a back tack will only to small non adjustable stitches in reverse. Just enough to back tack your stitch.

Oh, I see, thanks. One of the other devices that I saw on the US patent site had adjustable reverse.
