I agree with Tartan - see if someone in your family has a machine you can borrow or purchase from them. I've recently begun this hobby myself and am using my mom's old machine. She can't see that well anymore and doesn't use it. But she can offer suggestions from time to time so it's been nice. If I stick with this for a full year, I plan to buy a nicer machine then.
