I would do an experiment with a small test sandwich to try a different brand of washable glue. Sandwich it with the glue, quilt it, then bind it or zigzag the edges. When you're done launder it to see if the glue is removed. The Elmer's is a white school glue. Maybe you can find something comparable, or one of our members from Australia or NZ can suggest a substitute that's available there. Another option would be to have your friend pick up a small bottle of Elmer's Washable School Glue for you to try. It's very inexpensive. I've also tried pinmoor substitutes, but the real ones do work very well.
