Yes, Amish quilts are mostly pieced with treadle sewing machines, not hand pieced. Of course they are hand quilted. My parent's families were both Amish until they were about 6 yrs. old and the tradition of hand quilting has been kept strong in my family. My grandmother (now deceased), my mother, two of my three sisters and I are all avid hand quilters. I remember visiting an Amish relative's home in northern Indiana when I was a child. We walked past a young boy using an old fashioned style push mower (not motorized) in the front yard into the front room of the house where, under one of the open windows, sat a treadle sewing machine with a stunning Lone Star quilt in process. It was all solid colors in the colors of the rainbow with about 3 shades of each color as it radiated out from tip to tip of the large diamond that makes each point of the star. As a young girl, it made a lasting impression on me. The very simply furnished room with very plain white curtains blowing in the breeze of the open window contrasted with the beautiful, brightly-colored quilt in process. I've always wondered what the finished quilt looked like. Wonder if I could sell some of my quilts at those prices if I call them "Amish-heritage" or something?
