Don't know about you but I wash them before cutting them up. Don't have to worry about fraying. I also use Arm and Hammer with vinegar or ammonia and have it on soak cycle for as long as I can, It helps to rid of any deodorants or perfumes that the wearer may have used and also any odors from cedar closets. I also don't use any softeners, liquid or dryer sheets. FYI. You of course may already have your own way of doing things already. Then I just cut as I need. Unless I need to take my frustration for what ever reason out of my system. I also put them in a clear container labeled "whole pieces".
