The only way to sew whole hexagons together (with the dreaded Y seams) is to make sure you stop at the 1/4 inch mark at each corner. The 1/4 inch mark lets you flip the hexagons around to stitch in the next direction. I have seen the hexagons cut in half so they can be sewn in rows that way.
