Old wive's tale, I think. Vintage quilts were hand quilted with cotton thread because that was all that was available. More recently it was often taught to use cotton thread because it would break whereas polyester was too strong, wouldn't break, and instead the fabric fibers would break. Maybe if you were quilting with fishing line nylon, that would be true. These days, though, polyester thread is made so well the whole topic is a non-issue.
