Serger thread isn't strong enough to be used in piecing or regular sewing.
I've been using it for years. It has worked fine for me for piecing and even quilting.
IN fact, the thinner thread for piecing is nice because it helps you keep those 1/4" seams since a thicker thread takes up a bit more space.
