If you prefer to make a square in a square this way -- with individual triangles -- try this. You can disregard the first two sentences of the instructions in the first graphic, it was written for corner squares when setting a quilt on point.
Or you could do it the second way by 'snowballing' with squares that are one half the width of a side PLUS .75" (6" block = 3.75" snow ball square).
Either technique allows the "float" you need to keep sharp points.
