I like the 24 X 36 myself for cutting because my longest ruler is 6 X 24. I can't see needing a bigger mat if I don't have a longer ruler. I think the point of having the largest surface possible for cutting is so you can cut wherever you want. It would help to preserve the mat If you could move where you cut your fabric.
