I have done this, but only a little. It really isn't practical for larger quilts; you have to support the weight of the quilt so that it doesn't drag when the machine moves the hoop. Getting the hoop around the quilt with top, batting, and backing all together is a bit of a challenge. Personally, I don't recommend it for any but the smallest quilts. Don't you have to support the quilt while you're quilting it too? I've machine quilted/embroidered king size quilts on my machines - the first one was a Viking designer SE, short throat and my current one a Janome 12000 and had no trouble whatsoever. I did this work on my dining table. Worked like a champ.
