Default Using a Free Motion Couching Foot

I saw an episode of Quilting Arts on TV a few weeks ago and saw a demo of a free motion couching foot. After searching I found out I could get one for my 27 yr old Bernina that I bought my Mother for her birthday in 1987. Baby Lock doesn't make one that will bit my 7 yr old Ellegante. Well, after all that my question for any of you that may have used this foot or have a method of couching I need to know how you handle the yarn. Do I leave it in a ball, hank, or just wind it on an empty spool of some kind. The photo is my 1st attempt with the FM couching foot. I wound a small amount on an empty serger spool to do this. I am still trying to figure out which yarns I can use.
