I use either the gap in the top of the spool or clear plastic flexible tubing I purchased at the hardware store. I cut the tubing into 1" pieces, then cut a slit in the side. Because it's clear, I can tell at a glance what color the thread is. This is also what I use for bobbins, only I cut those 1/4" instead of 1" long.
