I ordered the darning (hopping) foot for my 1985ish Viking, and it worked fine for 4 months. Then the metal part that made it hop broke. I was right in the middle of fmq, and didn't want to wait for another, so I tried fmq with just a regular foot.
It worked just fine!
Later, I found a site that a bunch of people with the same machine had the experience of their foot breaking too, so I told them my experience.
So, I have a clear open toe foot that I use instead of a darning foot, and have been for the last year or so

I wanted to add that this particular machine has a dial for foot pressure, and one marked specifically 'darning' and I always use that when fmq
