I rarely decide on thr final borders before the rest of the top is done. Then I lay out my fabric in different configurations and audition them. In general, I usually opt for either 2 borders (narrow & wider) or add a flange and 1 border. i think of it like artwork and how it looks either with just a frame or with matting added. Do what looks good to you.
