One of the easiest designs for me is alternating lower case e's and l's. They work well in borders. I love doing hearts in borders on baby quilts. I've never drawn a pattern on my quilt but sometimes the blocks tell you what they want you to do. Draw your pattern on paper and trace over it again and again and again then do it on a practice swatch. You can sew over that multiple times too. Watch youtube videos.
