I haven't had too many problems - been quilting at my church for about 4 years total and we had a whole cloth white one recently. (I'm 51, wear bifocals for nearsightedness and astigmatism).
I'm curious about black on black too as some "artsy" quilt ideas I hope to pursue will involve that. And I will probably have to do them on my own, even if I intend to donate them, because the church ladies are used to just using white thread for everything. Should be interesting . . .
