With stencils I use a pounce. Marking lines I use a #2 mechanical pencil and if needed a Bohin white lead for dark fabrics. One of my favorites is a little chalk filled rolling marker. I just use a soft eraser to get rid of the pencil lines and a white terry towel to rub off the chalk marks. I do not wash my quilts after I finish them, as all the fabrics are washed before. I do hand quilt, so I mark a little, then quilt a little, then erase or dust off the chalk, so none of the marks stay on the fabric very long.
