Default question about old thread

I have received about ten spools of thread from an older lady's sewing supplies. The thread is on wooden spools, and is labeled "Lily Embroidery and Sewing 150 yds Mercerized * Boil Proof" on one end of the spool and "# S", with that number seeming to represent the color. The thread is variegated, and wound onto the spool to form stripes. It is very pretty!

I did the thread test...and the thread snaps very easily! Rats! My question is whether it is snapping easily because it is a very fine thread, and would still be suitable for using in light duty uses, or whether someone out there knows this thread, and can tell me that I definitely need to get rid of it because it has perished.

Can anyone help me?
