My suggestion is a more manly version of a pattern from
The Pattern Basket called Ruffles. I saw a masculine version of it hanging at an LQS. I am linking a picture I took for myself, just so I could remember the pattern... wish I had taken a photo of the entire quilt, but this is enough for you to get the idea.
