If you use batting (or any 3rd layer for lining), you should quilt it. Then it won't be a 10 minute table runner.
I've made several of these runners, and they turn out great. If you want more "substance", use decorator fabric. Not only will it have more substance without having to quilt it, it makes a longer runner because of the 54" width - which becomes the length.
