On this particular quilt I did the HST which was alot of fun.. I just ran into alot of problems because as I went it was so out of shape I used the quarter inch foot which really helps keep the seams the correct size but the fabric kept stretching out.. I can't wait to do another one with better quality fabric.
When you mention "out of shape? ... was it caused by the HSTs?
You might want to look at the different ways to make them.
I find the best way is to do the square with the diagonal line that you stitch on both sides, and do multiples of them together as a grid on the fabric before I stitch. Then cut, press and trim to size. I oversize in the grid stage, so that when they are trimmed, I can make them precisely the size they are to be.

This might help your "out of shape" problem, and with your 1/4" foot, you'll be well on the way to the perfectly pointy points that we all love to accomplish!

Another way for HSTs would be PPd or triangulations.
