Besides the warm salt water, my favorite so far, for those who can tolerate them zinc lozenges work really well. Flavored so they can just be sucked for a few minutes until dissolved, they're usually available in grocery and drug stores in the cold remedies section. (Perhaps because I take a daily zinc supplement I cannot use the lozenges; as soon as one hits my tongue I start to gag, which stops as soon as I spit out the lozenge. But my son uses them with no problem, as do several friends.)
