Default PANIC - I've broken my beautiful 201 handcrank!!!

OK. I am not a stupid person, but lack mechanical skills. A lot. I had a thread jam on my 201 that I couldn't remove with tweezers. So I got out the manual and it said to push the spring on the bobbin assembly (looked more like a tab to me). Did that, top ring came off and I was able to get all the thread out. But now I can't get the ring back on the bobbin assembly correctly. Every time I think I have it, it comes loose again after only a few stitches. I am trying to be very careful with the spring/tab thingy because I don't want to break it off. Any suggestions, anyone? I really don't want to take it into a repair shop and confess my sins....

Any help appreciated. I love my 201 handcrank!
