I second the advice to visit
www.quilterscache.com (with the girls) and pick some easy blocks. I did a star sampler quilt on another forum, and each person picked a star block that we each made at home with our own fabrics. It stretched my capabilities a bit, and I ended up with one of my most favorite quilts ever.
Each block can be a separate lesson.
