A few weeks ago, someone posted a photo of a lovely antique box that they had refinished. It was beautiful, and I wanted to research that type box, but can't remember the name of it. Sounds like an old sewing box since you mentioned folding up on hinges. Logical place to keep it would be on top of a sewing machine.
