Default QAYG Question

I'm making a table runner, found the pattern online, and it's QAYG strips across the width of the runner. I'm getting some puckering (using one layer of cotton batting).

Should I use my walking foot to sew the pieces together? Normally that's what you would use if you were doing the quilting (stitch in ditch, straight lines, etc). I'm thinking the fabric will feed better, but would appreciate thoughts of those more experienced than I.

Thank you in advance.
