CD’s Famous Low Calorie Windsock Recipe
They are a simple design made out of recycled 1/2-inch plastic parcel strapping, nylon flag fabric, and 7/8-inch wide Grosgrain ribbon.
I make a 4-inch diameter by 14-inch long open tube with the fabric, turning a 3/4-inch hem casing on the top end and a 1/4-inch hem on the other.
I leave a slot inside in the casing where my side seam comes together.
I cut a piece of the strapping (14 inches, I think), and round one end off with scissors to feed it into the casing until it’s all inside the casing (ends overlapped).
I cut 6 pieces of ribbon, 36 inches long, 3 each of two contrasting colors. (I used our school colors)
I space the ribbons evenly (by eye) around the bottom edge as I sew them on, alternating colors.
I cut 3 pieces of heavy nylon twine 24 inches long and knot each end. With an ice pick, I eyeball three evenly spaced spots around the top casing, and push a hole through the 2 layers of nylon just below the strapping. I double the twine and push the loop through the hole from the outside with the pick, then put the loose ends of each twine up over the top rim, through the loop, and pull tight.
I take the 6 loose ends and tie them into a fishing swivel all at the same time using an overhand knot. I work all of the 6 knotted ends down to the overhand knot and tighten the overhand knot as tight as I can with fingernails.
I use a butane lighter to singe the loose ends of the ribbon.
Done.
