I don't know why it's not acceptable. I was about to say that I prefer the look of hand-binding, but on further consideration that could be because I've never done a binding by machine that didn't look atrocious!
I enjoy doing it by hand so I don't mind... but sometimes it would be nice to get it done faster by machine.
