I use silica sand (glass beads) for my pincushions, and have made many, never had any issues with the sand leaking out. I make a small inner bag from BATIKS, as it has a very tight fabric weave. I posted a tutorial Oct 29th 2011, on my pincushion and attached scrap bag construction.
