Welcome from Nevada! I used to be a seamstress who turned to quilting in her older years. Trust me, it's not quite that simple to just follow a pattern and use 1/4" seams. I found it to be quite a steep learning curve, but just on the quilting stuff. I can't imagine trying quilting without a sewing background, which is very useful to me, and will be for you.
