I'm not sure I totally agree that we are more difficult to make for. I think charsuewilson gave good advice. Just don't make it feminine.
My wife and I made double sized quilts for each of our 2 young grandsons. We used camo fabric with a log cabin pattern. Our son said he was jealous and wanted a camo quilt too, but he didn't want any pink camo. So we agreed to make him a California King with camo. I have a panel with a bear that we'll put in the center and then camo log cabin blocks around the panel. We have some camo jelly rolls we'll use for those. We found a small piece of pink camo that we'll work into the quilt just because he said to not use pink!
