I have used embroidery floss, inexpensive acrylic yarn and crochet cotton through the years to tie. My preference is embroidery floss BUT other sites say not to use it since it frays....not my experience. Yarn ties get a little lumpy after a bunch of washings and crochet cotton doesn't look sturdy enough to me. I would suggest using fleece (on sale really cheap this time of year!) for backings so you don't have to use batting, just the top and the fleece. This will make it easier to tie and also, fleece doesn't shift or migrate so there are no rules about how close together you must tie it. I make all of my grandson's quilts with fleece backing!
