Well, to avoid working with bias cuts, I did the squares at the ends of the diagonal rows. Then after assembling, I lined up the ruler allowing the 1/4 inch seam past the cardinal fabric, and trimmed them up. There is waste that way, but as I said, it eliminates the bias edge. I haven't measured the finished size, but this one is probably just over 50 inches long. So when I did the smaller ones, there was really little waste on those squares when trimmed.
