I finally figured out how to get the blocks into the sashing. The blocks are just two 9-patches. The dark 9-patch is 4 mediums and 4 darks put together with a light print in the center. The second 9-patch is four light-medium 4-patches in the corners, four white blocks on the sides and the 4-patch of all mediums in the center.
That doesn't sound hard at all. Right?

- So in your first picture you have the 9-patch that includes the 4-patch corners outlined. Now reduce the other to a 9-patch, and you have it.
Of course, now you have to create the sashing so that the colored squares fall in the right places.
